At Mini Movers, every child is treated as an individual, with support tailored to their unique goals and aspirations. The club's focus is always on the enjoyment of sport, ensuring that each young athlete finds joy and fulfillment in their chosen activities.
Running and athletics play a crucial role in the holistic development of children, benefiting them both mentally and physically. Physically, regular participation in sports helps children improve their cardiovascular health, build stronger muscles and bones, and enhance their overall coordination and motor skills. Engaging in running and other athletic activities also promotes healthy habits that can last a lifetime, reducing the likelihood of obesity and related health issues. The physical exertion experienced during sports also leads to the release of endorphins, the body's natural mood elevators, which contribute to a child’s sense of well-being and happiness.
Mentally, running and athletics provide children with invaluable life skills and psychological benefits. The structured environment of sports fosters discipline, perseverance, and time management, as children learn to balance their athletic commitments with academic and social responsibilities. Team sports, such as cricket, encourage social interaction and teamwork, teaching children the importance of cooperation, communication, and empathy. Furthermore, the challenges faced in athletics help build resilience and self-esteem, as children learn to overcome obstacles, set and achieve goals, and celebrate their progress. These mental and emotional skills not only enhance a child's current quality of life but also equip them with the tools they need to navigate the complexities of adulthood with confidence and grace.
Glen Hilton is the dedicated Head Coach of Mini Movers and the Allerton Junior Athletics Club in Northallerton. With a rich history as a former England Cross Country Runner, Glen has been instrumental in the club's growth and success over the past decade. Under his guidance, the club has flourished, boasting over 100 members, many of whom have represented North Yorkshire in various competitions.
Glen's impressive personal best times include 24:40 for 5 miles, 14:50 for 5k, and 3:52 for 1500 meters. He has also been a five-time North East Junior Cross Country Champion and a Junior Great North Run winner. Glen has also represented his country on several occasions. His commitment to fostering young talent and his passion for athletics make him an invaluable asset to the club and the local community.
In coaching me over the past five years, Glen has been an invaluable mentor and motivator. After competing as a gymnast during my early childhood and winning medals at national championships, a serious injury cut short my gymnastics career. Joining Allerton Juniors introduced me to the world of athletics, and under Glen's mentorship, I have proudly worn Cleveland and North Yorkshire vests. His unwavering support has enabled me to qualify for the UK National Cross Country Championships this year, representing Yorkshire.
I run whenever I can even in High Atlas Mountains this summer, whilst on holiday. Running is something I will always do.
Glen Hilton's dedication, expertise, and genuine care for his athletes make him an outstanding coach and mentor. He has supported me every step of the way, and I am forever grateful for his guidance and encouragement in my athletic journey. Tristan Baker February 2025
